“I lift up my eyes to the mountains— where does my help come from? 2 My help comes from the Lord, the Make of heaven and earth.” Psalm 121:1-2

Regardless of your social stature, wealth, wisdom, and social capital, a mountain will be erected one day in front of you that will challenge you to the core. The storms will be boisterous and the waves will hit the foundation of your house. This mountain has a name, it can be finances, family, job, unemployment, health, or any other issue that can keep you awake at night. You may even reach out to your network thinking to find some relief. To your disbelief, you may only be met with the limitation of mankind. This is typical of human existence. The psalmist here depicted such a reality.

When dust rises above our heads, the answer will not lie around us. Let’s not accuse men of their inability to help us in these times even if they look like it is within their means to rescue us. Man is limited. We can draw the following lessons from the psalmist:

1. Remove your gaze from the issue: we tend to amplify the issues above God. Even when the devil is roaring so hard on us with various challenges, this is but a distraction to keep our attention on the issues. The issues usually arise on the verge of a breakthrough, when a promise or a prophecy has been given by God in order to foster unbelief in us. Peter was doing just fine, trusting in the promise of the Lord as he walked on water. As long as his gaze was on Jesus, he was pressing on. The moment his attention shifted to his external environment, he suddenly realized how boisterous the wind and the waves were, and doubt crippled him. He started sinking and yelling at the top of his lungs for help.

2. Run with the baton: the baton here represents the promise, vision, dream or prophesy given to you. Keep on moving even when people do not understand you, the Lord has your back. The main reason you do not see or hear him is that he is standing by your side. He is expecting you to move by faith, not by sight. Habakkuk 2:2 … “Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald[b] may run with it”. This is the surest way to not only assess progress but staying on the right track.
