"The following night the Lord stood near Paul and said, 'Take courage! As you have testified about me in Jerusalem, so you must also testify in Rome.'" Acts 23:11

When we read Acts 27, we often focus on God's power in delivering Paul from the violent storm and pay much less attention to the attitude of the apostle Paul, which worked hand in hand with God's intervention. I believe that understanding Paul's attitude can help us navigate the headwinds of our own lives.

Indeed, Acts 27 shows how God preserved Paul from death by keeping him safe through the storm and the shipwreck. Yet it is important to recognize not only God's protection but also the calmness, composure, and leadership that Paul demonstrated throughout the ordeal.

Before the storm intensified, Paul warned those on board that the voyage would result in great loss (Acts 27:9–10). During the storm, when fear had gripped everyone, Paul assured them that no one would lose his life because God had revealed it to him through an angel (Acts 27:22–24). Furthermore, shortly before the shipwreck, Paul urged everyone to eat (Acts 27:33–36).

Many of us may attribute Paul's confidence and assurance solely to the angel's appearance in Acts 27:23. However, I believe there was something deeper behind his unwavering faith. Even before the angel appeared, Paul had already discerned the danger facing the ship and its passengers. His confidence was rooted in a promise God had given him earlier.

In Acts 23:11, while Paul was being held in the barracks, the Lord told him: "Take courage! As you have testified about me in Jerusalem, so you must also testify in Rome." Paul knew that God had called him to Rome. Therefore, he could face every challenge with confidence because he believed that God's purpose for his life had not yet been fulfilled. This promise enabled him to endure numerous headwinds, including the assassination plot against him (Acts 23:12–15), his imprisonment under Felix (Acts 24:22–27), and many other trials.

Paul probably navigated these difficulties by continually focusing on God's promise. In the same way, Joseph held on to the vision God had given him despite years of hardship, and David clung to God's promise that he would become king despite many obstacles.

This message encourages us to focus less on the challenges we face and more on the word and promises we have received from God. Circumstances may change, and opposition may come, but God's purposes remain unchanged.
