“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.” Psalms 32:8

Whenever we enter into seasons of difficulty, many of us instinctively look for human guidance. While there is nothing wrong with seeking counsel from others, we must be careful not to overvalue human assistance and, in doing so, undervalue God’s ultimate guidance.

The journey of the Israelites illustrates this clearly. From Egypt to the Red Sea, and from the Red Sea to Mount Sinai, God consistently guided them. In Exodus 13:21–22, the Lord went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. In Numbers 9:15–23, their movement depended entirely on the cloud. Whenever it lifted, they set out.

However, in Numbers 10:29–31, Moses asks his brother-in-law Hobab to remain with them, saying, “You know where we should camp in the wilderness, and you can be our eyes.” This statement raises an important reflection. Moses, a remarkable leader, seems here to rely on human insight in a way that appears to elevate it alongside divine guidance. The expression “ be our eyes” may sound like an exaggeration, considering that God Himself had been guiding them visibly and consistently through the cloud and the ark.

Yet, God did not change His method. In Numbers 10:33–34, the ark of the covenant went ahead of them to find a resting place, and the cloud of the Lord remained over them by day. Their success in the wilderness was still anchored in divine direction, not human expertise.

Although later passages (Judges 1:16; Judges 4:11) suggest that Hobab’s descendants lived among the Israelites, the book of Numbers does not clearly show that Hobab became their guide in the wilderness. At most, he could have been a helpful support but definitely not their primary source of direction.

The true “ eyes ” of Israel were the presence of God through the cloud and the ark.

This message reminds us of a critical balance: human assistance has its place, but it must never replace or overshadow God’s guidance. Our ultimate direction must always come from Him.

May God give us the wisdom to discern the difference between helpful human support and His sovereign guidance in the name of Jesus.
