“And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went and filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad” Gen. 21:19
Blindness is twofold: it is both physical and spiritual. A physically blind person cannot see what surrounds him/her (Gen. 19:11); (s)he lives in a kind of constant darkness. Such was the case of Bartimeus until Jesus showed him mercy. Spiritual blindness is even more dangerous especially when the person can see physically. Remember how Jesus called the Pharisees, addressing them as blind leaders although they could see physically.
Our anchor verse underscores the importance of having seeing eyes. In the wilderness, Hagar and Ishmael had exhausted the water provision Abraham gave them; they thought all hope was lost and, out of sheer despair, Hagar shifted her eyes off her son, not wanting to witness his death. God heard Ishmael’s cry and he sent an angel to talk to his mother. The Lord renewed his promise to bless Ishmael, opened Hagar’s eyes to the presence of a well of water. Can you imagine that! There was water so near to two dying people and it took God opening the mother’s eyes to see it, to enjoy it and to escape death.
In Genesis 28:16, after the dream he had where he saw angels ascending and descending from heaven on a ladder, Jacob said: “(…) surely the Lord is in this place; and I knew it not”. In 2 King 6:17, it took Elisha’s prayer for his servant to see the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. In number 22:31, although Balaam’s physical eyes were open, he could not see the angel of the Lord. God had to open his spiritual eyes for him to understand his horse’s behavior.
My brother and sister, seeing eyes are a grace of the Lord his children should fully enjoy. In this wicked and competitive world, only relying on our physical eyes can make us pass by the greatest opportunities of our lives. Who knows if that breakthrough you are looking for is not in the power of the (wo)man living next door to you while you are making plans to go to Dubai or US for it? Just as he did to Hagar, let God open your spiritual eyes to anything valuable you are looking for. Get that edge over the unbelievers and ask the Lord today to open your eyes to what you need to do to fulfill your destiny.
Remain blessed!
