"Elijah was a human being, even as we are." James 5:17
Today, it is common to see Christians running after pastors in search of miracles, rather than spending personal time with God. The main reason is that many see leaders or pastors as extraordinary people while viewing themselves as ordinary. But the truth is: we are all ordinary people who serve one extraordinary God.
The Bible reminds us: “Elijah was a human being, even as we are. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain… Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain” (James 5:17–18). We often focus on the faith and prayers in this passage, but overlook the simple fact that Elijah was a human being just like us. A closer look at his life shows that he was no superhuman. In fact, when threatened by Jezebel, Elijah ran to another country to save his life (1 Kings 19). Yet when he turned back to God in prayer, God strengthened him and sent him back to Israel.
Elijah was not alone in this. Peter, who appeared the boldest among Jesus’ disciples, revealed his humanity when he denied Jesus three times out of fear (Luke 22:54–62). But the same Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, later stood courageously before the authorities and declared: “It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, that this man stands before you healed” (Acts 4:10) . By Acts 5:40–42, he even rejoiced at being beaten for the name of Jesus.
Apart from Jesus Christ, no one on earth is inherently supernatural. We are all ordinary human beings, but through faith and the power of the Holy Spirit, God enables us to do extraordinary things. Jesus Himself declared: “Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these” (John 14:12).
This is proof that God can use anyone including pastors and ordinary believers alike to accomplish great exploits. What we need is not to chase after men, but to walk in faith and be filled with the Holy Spirit.
