“During the peak traffic hour in Southern California one day, I drove my car up an on-ramp and entered Interstate 5. As soon as I merged into the slow lane, I heard a loud bang. Then my car swerved out of control, heading left across four lanes.
As my world whirled around me, I closed my eyes and cried out, “ Jesus .”
My Camry hit the center divider of the freeway, then landed safely in a dirt shoulder; just twenty feet beyond me, the shoulder ended abruptly. Whew! Only the Lord knows how many cars would have plowed into me from behind if there hadn’t been that timely niche of escape.
When I realized God had miraculously spared my life, I immediately thanked Him for being “Johnny on the spot.” However, after gathering my wits, I apologized for my short-sighted remark. The Alpha and Omega – who knows the end from the beginning - didn’t instantly show up to rescue me! Nothing catches Him by surprise. Instead, I praised Him for being my Constant Companion.
As I sat trapped in my car, trembling like a leaf, a highway patrolman arrived and assessed the situation. “You’re a very fortunate lady,” he remarked. “Look at your skid marks across those lanes. And you’re not even injured?”
“Oh, I know why I wasn’t hurt,” I replied. “At the exact moment my car started swerving, I called on the name of Jesus”
The officer smiled and gave me a thumbs-up. “I know what you mean.”
Based on the placement of the dents in my car, the patrolman determined that a large truck had hit my rear fender. He called for roadside assistance, and within an hour, my car was towed to a gas station. I surprised myself by boldly declaring to six people there that God had just saved my life in a freeway accident. “So remember to call on the powerful name of Jesus,” I pleaded with them.
You never know whom God might place in your pathway who’s ripe to hear a passionate testimony about the God who’s there. I prayed on that traumatic day that the Holy Spirit would speak to hearts through my words. For our awesom-azing God will respond to anyone who calls on the name of Jesus (Rom. 10:13)
Perhaps you can recall a crisis in your own life when you cried out to Jesus and He intervened. Why not share that victory in Christ with others? It will encourage the brethren. And you could point out to pre-Christians that the greater disaster they could ever face is their separation from God. But if they call on our Redeemer, trusting in Him, He will welcome them into His family and be their Constant Companion – today, tomorrow, and forever.”
