Will my beloved stepdaughter ever wake up? Will she ever walk again? As I sat in the ICU waiting room, I couldn’t believe that my “treasured daughter” (a title I affectionately call her) had been shot in the stomach by a teenage gang-girl on drugs.

Fifteen or so family members sat with my husband and me, intensely awaiting updates. Her surgeon had told us that she flatlined for four or five minutes soon after checking herself into Emergency and then collapsing.

I sank onto a lobby couch and opened my Bible to the book of Acts. Since it is filled with miraculous works of the Holy spirit, I decided to read every page to find a specific passage to pray for Sherry.

Two verses jumped off the page. Peter and John were taken into custody and questioned by the Sanhedrin (Jewish Court) about a crippled beggar who was miraculously healed through Peter’s prayer. “By what power or by what name have you done this? They asked (Acts 4:7)

Filled with the Holy Spirit, Peter replied that the lame man stood whole “by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,” whom they crucified but whom God had raised from the dead (v.10).

Without a moment’s hesitation, I asked God to touch Sher so she could “ stand whole again by the powerful name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth.” I didn’t pray to a nebulous god, or a distant god, or a god of a religious system. I prayed to the supreme God, The Fountain of Living Water who gives life .

I wasn’t the only person praying for Sher’s recovery. But at the moment I prayed that Scripture, God gave me an extra measure of faith that He would heal her wounds. And He stepped in! Sher’s condition teetered for a few days, but after three weeks in the hospital she was released. She even walked to the car without assistance. Praise God, she could stand whole again!

Are you ready to call on our awesom-azing God in times of crisis? He is ready to hear from you. He will already be on the scene when you call. After all, He is mighty in power and assures us that He will grant any petition that lines up with His will (1 John 5:14-15). And if we focus more on His ability than our problems, surely our faith will increase an extra measure.

God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think according to the power that works in us (Ephesian 3:20).
